Life & career

Park Chun-su (朴春秀) was the 16th generation of the Jangye branch of the Jinwon Park and eldest son of Park Geun-hyo. His grandfather was the Imjin War volunteer leader Park Gwang-jeon, his father Park Geun-hyo, his younger brother Park Chun-jang and his cousin Park Chun-ho. The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture entry on Park Chun-jang says that at thirty, ashamed of lacking learning, Chun-jang first studied under his eldest brother.

When the Second Manchu invasion broke out in 1636 he answered An Bang-jun's call and, with his cousin Park Chun-ho and others, gathered over 300 volunteers at Boseong and marched north, reaching the Cheongju area (Yeosan in some sources), but disbanded them on hearing that the court had made peace. The seven descendants of Park Gwang-jeon who took part are called the "Seven Worthies" uprising.

His dates and offices were not confirmed in this survey. Namu Wiki says he was posthumously named Left Royal Secretary, but this could not be cross-checked with other official sources and is given as a reference only.

The Uprising at Boseong

In the Second Manchu invasion An Bang-jun raised volunteers at Boseong, and Park Chun-su answered by gathering over 300 men. They marched north on hearing that Namhansanseong was besieged but disbanded on learning that peace had been concluded.

The Seven Worthies of the Family

The "Seven Worthies" uprising is described as the joining of Park Gwang-jeon's descendants, including Park Geun-hyo's sons Chun-su and Chun-jang, Chun-jang's son Jin-hyeong and Park Geun-je's son Chun-ho. The makeup of the seven differs by source, so only confirmed names are given here.
