Song Chi-gyu, pen name Gangjae, was a scholar who, though named as high as vice-minister of Personnel under Sunjo, is said to have declined every post.
His teacher Kim Jeong-muk is said to have given him the pen name Gangjae ('firm studio') because he found the young man too gentle.
He continued the lineage of Yi I and Kim Jang-saeng, taught a unitary li-gi view, and trained many students. Under Heonjong he was raised to Jeongheon Daebu, and about a hundred disciples are said to have worn mourning and followed his bier.
