Regarded as one line of the Shin (申) clan whose ancestral seat is Aju. In the 2015 Census the 아주 신씨 clan numbered about 33,710 people, one of Korea's major surnames and clans. Eup-pa, Gwi-pa, Andong-pa, Jikjang-gong-pa, Jeongeun-gong-pa
The Eup branch descends from Shin Gwang-bu (申光富) of the 7th generation. According to the Aju Shin association's genealogy chart, among the descendants of Shin Ik-hyu (申益休), the first ancestor enfeoffed as Prince Aju, Shin Yun-yu (申允濡) of the 5th generation served as Minister of Revenue and settled in Sangju, and Shin U (申祐) of the 6th generation served as inspector of Jeolla; the Eup and Gwi branches split between Shin U's two sons, Shin Gwang-bu and Shin Gwang-gwi. Shin Gwang-bu held the post of Naebu-ryeong.
Several sub-branches, including the Yeonsan, Hyeollyeong, Jeongeun-gong and Pangwan-gong branches, later stemmed from the Eup branch.
The Gwi branch descends from Shin Gwang-gwi (申光貴), second son of Shin U (申祐) of the 6th generation. The Aju Shin association's chart records that he served as magistrate of Bongju and as director of the Office of Military Supplies.
The Andong and Jikjang-gong branches, among others, split from the Gwi branch.
The Andong branch is one of the lines descended from Shin Si-saeng (申始生) of the Gwi branch's 10th generation. According to the Aju Shin association, the Andong branch compiled the clan's first genealogy in 1819, the Gimyobo, regarded as the origin of Aju Shin genealogies.
That genealogy took Shin Sung-gyeom, founder of the Pyeongsan Shin, as the remote ancestor and his 12th-generation descendant Shin Ik-hyu as the first ancestor of the Aju line, an arrangement later branch genealogies are said to have followed.
The Jikjang-gong branch descends from Shin Gan (申幹), known as Jikjang-gong, of the 12th generation in the Gwi line. It branched, alongside the Andong branch, from Shin Si-saeng of the 10th generation, and its descendants are described as living around Cheongju and Chungju in North Chungcheong and Uiseong in North Gyeongsang.
The Jeongeun-gong branch belongs to the Eup line and descends from Shin Won-bok (申元福), pen name Jeongeun, of the 12th generation, a descendant of Shin Sa-ryeom (申士廉), known as Eonyang-gong, of the 8th generation. It appears in the Aju Shin association's chart as one of the main sub-branches of the Eup branch.
