The Gangneung Park clan (江陵 朴氏) is a Silla-descended Park lineage seated at Gangneung, Gangwon. Clan tradition takes Bak Hyeokgeose as the original ancestor and King Pasa Isageum as the remote ancestor, and venerates Park Sun (朴純), who passed the civil examination in Goryeo, as its founding or revered ancestor. Namu Wiki calls him a 35th-generation descendant of Bak Hyeokgeose and 26th of Bak Je-sang, while Wikipedia lists Bak Je-sang as founder and Park Sun as revered ancestor, so sources differ; the generation counts are genealogical tradition.
Park Sun is said to have passed the examination in 1174 (4th year of King Myeongjong), served as Bomungak attendant, Governor of the Southern Capital and Minister of Military Affairs concurrently General, and been enrolled as a Bojeong Jeongguk merit subject for suppressing Seok Rin's rebellion. He is said to have been named Lord of Gyerim under King Sinjong and to have retired to Gangneung, which is the traditional link to the seat. His father is given as Park So (朴篠), posthumously made Pyeongjangsa.
The clan is not among the lines said to descend from the eight princes of King Gyeongmyeong (Miryang, Bannam, Hamyang, Suncheon, Muan, Juksan, Goryeong, Chungju); it is classed with the line said to descend from King Pasa and the Silla loyal minister Bak Je-sang. Namu Wiki says Park Sun's elder brother Park Ron became the ancestor of the Yeonghae Park clan, so the two are traditionally linked. These links are genealogical tradition, not historically proven.
In the 2015 Statistics Korea census the clan numbered 15,866, with roughly 80 percent said to live in Gangwon Province. A well-known clan village is Hasidong-ri, Gangdong-myeon, Gangneung.
Namu Wiki lists Gyeongju, Ubong, Haeju, Isan, Gujin and Noseong Park as seats split off from Gangneung, while Wikipedia mentions Gaeseong Park. The two lists differ and the underlying genealogical sources are not confirmed in public material.
Namu Wiki gives a generation-name table beginning with the 24th generation Dong (東), Yong (容), Gyun (均)/Gyu (奎), Jong (鍾), Cheol (澈), Sang (相), Yeol (熱), Gyo (敎), Seon (善), Je (濟), Geuk (極), Byeong (炳) and so on, following the Five Elements radicals. The source itself warns of possible character errors, so check with your clan.
