Founder and Origin of the Clan Seat

The Gunwi Park clan (軍威 朴氏) honors Silla's founding king Park Hyeokgeose as its distant progenitor and takes Bak Heon (朴軒) as its founding ancestor, traditionally a 15th-generation descendant of Bak Eon-sin, Prince Sokham and third son of King Gyeongmyeong. He is said to have passed the civil examination under King U of Goryeo, helped Yi Seong-gye found Joseon and been enrolled as a founding secondary merit subject, rising to vice-minister of Works and being enfeoffed as Lord of Gunwi.

Place Within the Park Family

Gunwi is traced, together with Hamyang and Samcheok, to Bak Eon-sin's line. This is a genealogical tradition rather than documented history, and some Park clans such as Bannam do not accept the eight-prince account.

History of Gunwi

Gunwi, in central North Gyeongsang, was originally Silla's Nodongmyeok county, renamed Jeokra in 757. Under Goryeo it belonged to Sangju (1018) and Ilseon (1143); the Sejong Annals gazetteer lists five native clans there: Bak, Na, Bang, O and Seo. It became Gunwi County in 1896 and absorbed parts of Uiheung and Uiseong in 1914.

Population and Examination Graduates

The 2015 census counted about 1,333 members. In Joseon the clan produced four civil examination graduates (Bak Sim, Bak Tae-hwi, Bak Hyeon-bo, Bak Hui-an) and thirteen military graduates. Settlements, branches, generation names, a clan association and details of notable individuals are not confirmed in public sources.
