About the 계림 박씨 clan

A clan seated at Gyerim, an old name of Gyeongju, said to descend from Park Sun-hyeon, Grand Prince Gyerim and son of Silla's King Gyeongae. Public sources are sparse, so population and other details are unconfirmed. Even among people surnamed 박, a different clan seat (bon-gwan, 계림) means a different lineage. New to these terms? See the bon-gwan, pa & hangnyeol guide.

Founding Ancestor and Origin of the Seat

The Gyerim Park clan (鷄林 朴氏) takes as its seat Gyerim, an old name of Silla and thus of Gyeongju. It honors Silla's founder Park Hyeokgeose as remote ancestor and Park Sun-hyeon (朴舜玄), said to be a son of the 55th Silla king, Gyeongae, enfeoffed as Grand Prince Gyerim, as mid-founder. Wikipedia's "Park (surname)" entry, citing the Gyerim Park genealogy, writes the same name as "Park Su-hyeon", so the Korean spelling differs between sources.

Place Within the Park Family

King Gyeongae was the younger brother of King Gyeongmyeong, and Namuwiki groups his descendants as the Gyeongae line, separate from the descendants of Gyeongmyeong's eight princes. Tradition holds that the eldest son, Grand Prince Geumseong Park Gyo-sun, is the ancestor of the Ulsan Park clan and the second son, Grand Prince Gyerim Park Sun-hyeon, of the Gyerim Park clan. Because Gyerim is also a name for Gyeongju, it is easily confused with Gyeongju Park and Wolseong Park, but Namuwiki explains that Gyeongju Park is the Park Je-sang (King Pasa) line, Wolseong Park the Gyeongmyeong line, and Gyerim Park the Gyeongae line, so all three differ. This too is later genealogical tradition, and seats such as Bannam do not accept this scheme.
