The Hakbong branch descends from Hakbong (鶴峯) Go In-hu (高因厚), second son of the Imjin War righteous-army leader Jebong Go Gyeong-myeong (高敬命). Go In-hu passed the civil examination and died alongside his father leading volunteer troops at the Battle of Geumsan; he was posthumously made Chief State Councillor with the title Uiyeol (毅烈).
Because his wife's family in Changpyeong, Damyang had no heirs, his descendants settled there to maintain their rites, and the branch is also called the Changpyeong Go clan. Go Jeong-ju, who opened a school in Changpyeong in the late Joseon period, and the righteous-army leader Go Gwang-sun belong to this line, and Go In-hu's great-great-grandson Go Eung-ik became the first settler in Buan, North Jeolla.
