남원 윤씨(南原 尹氏) — A Yun clan whose ancestral seat is Namwon in North Jeolla; its founder Yun Wi is said to have branched off from the Papyeong Yun clan.
A Yun clan whose ancestral seat is Namwon in North Jeolla; its founder Yun Wi is said to have branched off from the Papyeong Yun clan. In the 2015 Census the 남원 윤씨 clan numbered about 42,423 people, one of Korea's major surnames and clans. Even among people surnamed 윤, a different clan seat (bon-gwan, 남원) means a different lineage. Yun Wi's grandson Yun Don is said to have branched off as the Haman Yun clan. Clan sources mention the Haman branch as a major line, but its founder and lineage were not confirmed here.

The founder of the Namwon Yun clan (南原 尹氏) is Yun Wi (尹威), who according to Wikipedia is said to be a seventh-generation descendant of Yun Sin-dal, founder of the Papyeong Yun clan, and a great-grandson of General Yun Gwan. He passed the civil examination in 1176 (6th year of King Myeongjong of Goryeo) and held posts such as Doctor of the National Academy, and in 1200 he is said to have been enfeoffed as Count of Namwon for putting down a rebellion at Namwon while visiting Jeolla Province.
Two explanations are given. In one, his descendants made him founder and Namwon their seat, branching from the Papyeong Yun clan; in the other, Yun Wi died while serving as governor of the Western Capital, the people of Namwon asked to bury him there out of respect, and his descendants settled and adopted Namwon. Offices and dates vary by source, so check your genealogy.
Wikipedia says Yun Wi's grandson Yun Don branched off as the Haman Yun clan. Clan sources mention the Haman, Namwon, Deoksan-gun and Munjeonggong branches, but these are sometimes mixed with the Papyeong Yun branch list, so confirm with the clan association.
They include Yun Seom, who corrected the record of Taejo's ancestors on a Ming mission and fell at Sangju; his grandson Yun Jip, one of the Three Scholars executed at Shenyang for opposing peace; Yun Hyu, the Southerners' leading scholar in the northern-expedition and rites debates; and Yun Jeong-hyeon, minister of personnel and war. Wikipedia also lists Yun Hyo-jeon, Yun Haeng-im, Yun Byeong-jeong and Royal Consort Hwabin Yun among the seat's members.
Wikipedia gives 32,731 in 2000 and 42,423 in 2015.
