Hong Ju-won (洪柱元, 1606-1672) was a mid-Joseon royal son-in-law of the Pungsan Hong clan, with the courtesy name Geonjung, pen name Muha (also Muhadang) and posthumous title Munui. A grandson of Hong I-sang, he was the son of Hong Yeong (1584-1645), vice-minister of rites, and a daughter of Chief State Councillor Yi Jeong-gu of the Yeonan Yi clan. In 1623 he married Princess Jeongmyeong (1603-1685), daughter of King Seonjo and Queen Inmok, and the day after the wedding he was named Yeongan-wi with the rank of Sungdeok daebu. The marriage lifted the family's standing, and his father Hong Yeong was posthumously made Chief State Councillor.
Princess Jeongmyeong was the legitimate daughter of Queen Inmok and the sister of Grand Prince Yeongchang. In 1624, during Yi Gwal's rebellion, Hong Ju-won escorted the Dowager Queen Inmok and Queen Inyeol and was promoted for it; in 1631, as the Dowager's health worsened, King Injo raised his rank further. In 1647-1648 he went to Qing China as envoy of thanks, and after King Hyojong's accession in 1649 he was appointed envoy to announce the former king's death and request investiture. Since royal sons-in-law traditionally stayed out of politics, his life is recorded mainly in royal ceremonies and embassies.
Hong Ju-won had seven sons and one daughter. The eldest, Hong Man-yong, served as minister of rites under Sukjong; other sons include Hong Man-hyeong and Hong Man-hoe, and their descendants belong to the Chuman-gong branch. Wikipedia describes Hong Bong-han, Hong In-han, Hong Guk-yeong, Wonbin Hong and Hong Hyeon-ju (husband of Princess Suksun, King Jeongjo's second illegitimate daughter) as his descendants. The modern Hong Beom-sik and Hong Myeong-hui are also said to descend from the second son Man-hyeong. His tomb could not be confirmed here. He appeared as a character in the 2015 MBC drama Hwajeong.
He was named Yeongan-wi the day after the 1623 wedding. Princess Jeongmyeong, daughter of King Seonjo and Queen Inmok, lived until 1685. It was the first royal marriage of the Pungsan Hong.
He escorted the Dowager Queen Inmok during Yi Gwal's rebellion in 1624, went to Qing China as envoy of thanks in 1647-1648, and led the mission requesting investiture after Hyojong's accession.
The exact location of his tomb could not be confirmed here.
