Yi Jeong-yeol, of the Deoksu Yi clan, was born in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province, and graduated from Gyeongseong Law and Government Preparatory School. Detained briefly at Jongno Police Station during the March First Movement in 1919, he was soon released, and that October he sold private land yielding 200 seok of rice to fund the Provisional Government, delivering the proceeds through fundraiser Kang Tae-dong.
He continued selling his own land to raise funds, which he personally delivered to Yi Si-yeong and Kim Gu in Shanghai, and from 1932 he operated mines in Gwiseong and Sakju, North Pyeongan Province, to help finance the independence movement. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independence Medal, in 1963.
