Jin Yeong-so (陳泳素) was a grandson of the Ming naval commander Chen Lin. He crossed to Joseon after the fall of the Ming and is honored as the first ancestor of the Gwangdong Jin clan in Korea. According to the Digital Haenam Culture encyclopedia, his father was Chen Lin's son Chen Jiujing (陳九經). His name is written 陳泳素 or 陳泳溸 depending on the source.
Tradition holds that when the Ming fell to the Qing in 1644, he came to Joseon in keeping with his grandfather's wishes. He first stayed on Gogeumdo in Jeolla Province, now Gogeum-myeon in Wando County, where Chen Lin's naval headquarters and his Guan Yu shrine had been. He then moved to Haeri in Haenam. Korean Wikipedia says he had served in the Ming as gamguk suwisa and gave up his post, sailing from Nanjing and landing first at Jangseungpo on the south coast before moving to Gogeumdo. The encyclopedia's entry on Deoksong-ri gives his dates as "1644-?". Since 1644 is the year the Ming fell, it is unclear whether this is meant as his birth year.
In the next generation the family is said to have moved to present-day Deoksong-ri, Sani-myeon, Haenam, and named the village Hwangjo (皇朝) as subjects of the fallen Ming. Sources differ on the son's name. The encyclopedia's shrine entry names Jin Seok-mun (陳碩文), while its Deoksong-ri entry names Jin Seok-gwon (陳碩權) and Jin Yun-gwon (陳允權). In a 2014 Kyunghyang Shinmun report, the clan gave the grandson's name as Jo (詔). By that account, he gave up a naval post, sailed from Guangdong to Gogeumdo and married a local woman there. He died 16 years after his exile, leaving a fourteen-year-old son, Seok-mun. Whether Jo and Jin Yeong-so are the same person could not be confirmed.
His spirit tablet is kept at Hwangjo Byeolmyo on the hill behind Hwangjo Village, together with those of his grandfather Chen Lin, his father Chen Jiujing and his son Jin Seok-mun. The shrine was built in 1871 and is designated Haenam Local Cultural Heritage No. 10. The encyclopedia's entry on Haenam's long-settled clans also records that Jin Yeong-so of the Gwangdong Jin clan, a grandson of Chen Lin, came to Korea after the fall of the Ming and settled in Hwangjo-ri, Sani-myeon, where his descendants formed a clan village.
His descendants formed the Gwangdong Jin clan village at Hwangjo, Deoksong-ri, Sani-myeon, Haenam.
