Life & career

At age 12 he accompanied his father to Yanjing, the Yuan capital, where he learned Chinese and Mongolian, and, recognized by the Yuan chancellor Toghtogha, he held office there. After returning home he served as pandopanseo and as vice-commissioner of the Miljik office (miljik busa).

He rendered diplomatic service on several missions, including going to Ming China as a New Year's congratulatory envoy and petitioning envoy in 1382.

Taking part in the founding of Joseon in 1392, he was enrolled as a second-class founding merit subject and enfeoffed as Lord of Bokheung (Bokheung-gun), rising to chamchan munhabusa. His posthumous title was Sugwi.

Descendants

His son Jo Seo-gang and others entered official service, and the line continued as the Baecheon Jo clan.
