One of the Six Living Martyred Ministers who kept his fidelity to King Danjong

His courtesy name was Juong and his pen name Eogye. He passed the classics licentiate examination in 1453 and studied at the Confucian academy (Seonggyun-gwan).
When King Sejo usurped the throne in 1455, he gave up official service and retired to his home in Haman, living in seclusion below Mount Baegi and keeping his fidelity. For this conduct he is counted, together with Kim Si-seup and Won Ho, among the Six Living Martyred Ministers (saengyuksin).
Under King Sukjong he was posthumously granted the office of Minister of Personnel and the posthumous title Jeongjeol, and was enshrined at the Seosan Academy in Haman. His collected works, Eogye jip, survive as his literary legacy.
A leading figure of the Haman Jo clan; his descendant, the painter Jo Yeong-seok, compiled and transmitted the collected works Eogye jip.
