Life & career

In his suicide note, Min Yeong-hwan expressed responsibility for the nation's fall while urging his compatriots not to despair; he was given the posthumous title Chungjeong ("Loyal and Upright"), from which Seoul's Chungjeong-ro street takes its name. According to a well-known story, bamboo sprouted from the floorboards of the room where he died, its 44 leaves matching his age at death — the so-called "blood bamboo" (hyeoljuk).
