Life & career

Nam Su (南須, 1395-1477) is the founder of the Songjeong-gong branch of the Yeongyang Nam. The fourth son of Nam Yeong-beon, a jungnangjang, he is one of the four branch founders alongside his brothers Ho, I and Ryeong, who founded the Manho-gong, Hyeongam-gong, Banson-gong and Songjeong-gong branches. He is known by the pen name Songjeong (松亭).

Clan material introduces him as an inspector (gamchal) in the Office of the Inspector General under King Sejong, while the Daegu local-culture encyclopedia says he was magistrate of Yongdam but retired after the 1453 coup and never served again. The two records differ on his office, so check against the genealogy. He is said to have moved from Uljin to Yeonghae, and Cheoindang in Illyang-ri, Changsu-myeon, Yeongdeok, is described as an annex built where he settled from 1420.

His descendants became the most numerous branch, the Songjeong-gong, rooted around Illyang-ri in Yeonghae. The Seokho-gong branch that split from it lived at Ipseok in Daegu, and a lodge ('Hwajae') and lecture hall ('Yugyeongnu') honoring him are said to stand in Chuksan, Yeongdeok. See the Yeongyang Nam clan page for the clan overview.

The Youngest of Four Brothers

The four sons of Nam Yeong-beon founded the Manho, Hyeongam, Banson and Songjeong branches, and Nam Su, the youngest, opened the Songjeong-gong.

Settling Yeonghae and Cheoindang

Cheoindang, at 36 Illyang 2-gil, Changsu-myeon, Yeongdeok, is North Gyeongsang Cultural Heritage Material No. 666. It is said to have been first built by Nam Pil-dae, an 8th-generation descendant of Songjeong-gong, and later repaired by Nam Dal-man. The main hall was lost in the Korean War, leaving the pavilion and shrine.

The Seokho-gong Line and Ipseok, Daegu

Nam Sil of the Seokho-gong line, which split from the Songjeong-gong, is said to have come to Ipseok-dong in Daegu in 1600, and his descendants formed a clan village there into the early 1900s. Urbanization has largely ended its role as a clan village.

Grave

Facilities honoring him such as Hwajae and Yugyeongnu in Chuksan, Yeongdeok are mentioned, but the location of his tomb was not confirmed.

Descendants

The Songjeong-gong branch lives around Illyang-ri in Yeonghae, Yeongdeok and Cheongsong (Ungang-gong line), and includes the Seokho-gong line.
