Park Sul-hui came from a local gentry family of Hyeseong (around today's Myeoncheon, Dangjin) in late Silla. He is said to have entered Gung Ye's service as a bodyguard at about eighteen and later served Wang Geon (Taejo), rising to the rank of Daegwang. In Taejo's last years he is said to have worked to protect the position of the crown prince, the future King Hyejong, and in 943 shortly before Taejo died he is recorded as receiving charge of military and state affairs together with the Ten Injunctions (Hunyo Sipjo).
After Hyejong's death he was exiled to Gapgot on Ganghwa amid a power struggle and is said to have been assassinated in 945. He was later honored as Taesa Samjung Daegwang and enshrined in Hyejong's shrine. The Myeoncheon Park clan venerates him as its founding (or revered) ancestor.
