A Park lineage seated at Myeoncheon in Dangjin, South Chungcheong, said to revere Park Sul-hui, a local magnate of late Silla who became a Goryeo founding merit subject, as its founding or revered ancestor. In the 2015 Census the 면천 박씨 clan numbered about 4,328 people, one of Korea's major surnames and clans. Even among people surnamed 박, a different clan seat (bon-gwan, 면천) means a different lineage. The Myeoncheon Park clan (沔川 朴氏) is seated at Myeoncheon-myeon, Dangjin, South Chungcheong. The area was called Hye-gun in Baekje, became Hyeseong-gun under Silla's King Gyeongdeok, Myeoncheon-gun under Joseon's King Taejong, and in 1913 became a township of Dangjin. A Wikipedia infobox lists Bak Hyeokgeose as founder, but the text and clan tradition revere the Goryeo founding-era general Park Sul-hui (朴述熙) as founding or revered ancestor.
He is said to be a son of the local magnate Park Deuk-ui of Hyeseong and, for helping Wang Geon found Goryeo, to have been named Taesa Samjung Daegwang and Lord of Myeoncheon. Some sources call him a 16th-generation descendant of Bak Je-sang and 21st of King Pasa, which is genealogical tradition.
The clan is not among the eight-prince lines said to descend from King Gyeongmyeong; it is classed with the line claiming descent from King Pasa and Bak Je-sang. It stands out as a provincial gentry family that produced a Goryeo founding merit subject. The link up to Bak Je-sang is tradition, not documented history.
Park Sul-hui is said to have become Gung Ye's bodyguard around 890 and then served Wang Geon, rising to Daegwang. He is said to have worked to protect the future King Hyejong's place as crown prince and in 943 received charge of state affairs and the Ten Injunctions. After Hyejong's death he was exiled to Gapgot on Ganghwa and killed in 945, and was later enshrined in Hyejong's shrine. Park In-jeong (general) and Park Dae-bu (Minister of Works) are also named as Goryeo-era members.
The clan is said to have flourished from the 16th generation, brothers Park Yun-jang and Park Yun-seong. Known Joseon figures include Park Yu (minister, selected as an incorruptible official), Park Sam-gil (Vice-Minister of Personnel under Yeonsangun), Park Yeo-ryong (Minister of Personnel) and Park Seong-ryeol, who raised a righteous force in the Second Manchu Invasion. Clan villages are recorded around Ongjin in Gyeonggi, Chuncheon in Gangwon, Byeokseong in Hwanghae and Junghwa in South Pyongan.
By around the 22nd generation the clan is said to have split into 14 branches (Haksaeng-gong, Sabok-gong, Munon-gong, Haksaeng-gong Yeo-yun, Sajik-gong, Chambong-gong, Haksaeng-gong Yeo-ik, Saengwon-gong Yeo-gwal, Saengwon-gong Jeong, Seonmuryang-gong, Sowi-gong, Eomo-gong, Jinsa-gong and Cheomchu-gong). Most names are official titles, and the founders could not be verified from public sources, so no branch cards are given.
The 2015 census figure is 4,328. Wikipedia's article adds 7,666 for "Myeonseong Park" to reach 11,994, but Myeonseong (綿城) is an old name of Muan and is usually treated with the Muan Park clan, so that sum may be a confusion. Please check against the original Statistics Korea data.
A Myeoncheon Park Daejongchoe association exists, but its official website could not be confirmed in this research.
