Ryu Gong-gwon passed the examinations in 1160 and rose to jeongdang munhak and chamji jeongsa under King Myeongjong, and is said to have been famed for his prose and calligraphy. His posthumous name was Mungan; his sons Ryu Taek and Ryu Eon-chim founded the Bogya-gong and Sangseo-gong lines. The Munhwa Ryu genealogy treats him as its effective central ancestor.
