A military official of early Joseon who distinguished himself in the withdrawal from Wihwa Island and guarded the Northeast Frontier; effective founding ancestor of the Goksan Yeon clan (Lord of Gokseong)

Yeon Sa-jong (延嗣宗, 1366–?) was a military official of the late Goryeo and early Joseon period, and the figure whom the Goksan Yeon clan reveres as its effective founding ancestor. He was born in 1366 in Hamju (咸州, present-day Hamheung) in the Northeast Frontier of Goryeo. According to the Veritable Records of King Sejong, his family were originally people of Goksan in Hwanghae Province who had moved to Hamheung in his grandfather's generation, so that they had already lived there for three generations.
A fellow provincial of Yi Seong-gye (King Taejo of Joseon), he served as a jinmu (military adjutant) general during the withdrawal from Wihwa Island and distinguished himself. When Joseon was founded he was enrolled as a Merit Subject of the Withdrawal (Hoegun Gongsin) and a Founding Auxiliary Merit Subject (Gaeguk Wonjong Gongsin), and in the first year of King Taejong (1401), during the Second Strife of Princes, he served as a Grand General (Daejanggun) and, for aiding Prince Jeongan (later King Taejong), rose to the fourth rank of Merit Subject for Assisting the Enthronement (Jwamyeong Gongsin). He then passed through the posts of Senior General (Sangjanggun) and Minister of Taxation (Hojo Jeonseo) and was enfeoffed as Lord of Gokseong (谷城君).
As a man of the Northeast Frontier well versed in border affairs, over the reigns of Taejong and Sejong he served as Military Commissioner of the Northeast Frontier (Dongbukmyeon Byeongma Dojeoljesa), Investigating Commissioner of the Gilju Circuit, and Grand Commissioner of the Northeast Frontier concurrently Governor of Yeongheung, greatly contributing to defending the Northeast Frontier from Jurchen incursions. When the court deliberated on matters concerning the Northeast Frontier, the king would even summon him to seek his opinion. Later he was recalled to Hanseong (Seoul), where he served as Chief of the Hanseong Magistracy (Pan Hanseongbusa), Military Adjutant of the Three Armies, and Commander of the Central Army (Junggun Dochongje). By order of King Sejong he was also entrusted with refurbishing the Jeongneung (定陵), the tomb of Hwanjo (桓祖), the father of King Taejo, and erecting its memorial stele.
He had three sons—Yeon Gyeong (延慶), Yeon Bi (延庇), and Yeon Eum (延廕)—and today most of the Goksan Yeon clan descends from him. His eldest son Yeon Gyeong served as Governor of Anju and in 1450 was dispatched to Ming China as an envoy of gratitude (saeunsa).
He had the sons Yeon Gyeong, Yeon Bi, and Yeon Eum, and today most of the Goksan Yeon clan descends from him.
