Life & career

Of the Jeonui Yi clan, he was born in late Goryeo and was active in the early Joseon period. He served as Jip-ui of the Office of the Inspector-General, Prefect of Ganghwa, and Governor of Gangwon Province, and rose to the rank of Jaheon Daebu.

Renowned for his devoted filial piety, an anecdote tells that at the age of 70, to delight his 90-year-old mother, he wore multicolored children's clothing and played like a small child. King Sejong, honoring his filial conduct, bestowed upon him a royal inscription reading "Loyalty and filial piety passed down through the family; benevolence and reverence upheld through generations (家傳忠孝 世守仁敬)," along with a stool and staff (gwejang, 几杖).

While serving as Prefect of Gongju, he built the Sam-eun-gak Pavilion to honor the loyal subjects of Goryeo, and in later times he was enshrined in a Confucian academy.
