Life & career

Yi Hui-seung (李熙昇, 1896-1989) was a Korean linguist and poet, with the art name Ilseok (一石). His clan lineage was Jeonui.

As a member of the Korean Language Society, he took part in the Unified Korean Orthography and the standardization of the language, and endured imprisonment in the Korean Language Society Incident. After liberation, he served as a professor at Seoul National University, devoting himself to research in Korean linguistics and to educating younger scholars.

He compiled the vast Great Dictionary of the Korean Language (Gugeo Daesajeon) and left academic works such as An Outline of Korean Linguistics (Gugeohak Gaeseol) and the essay collection Ttalkkakbari.
