Founder and Origin of the Seat

The Beonsi Park clan (本溪 朴氏, Benxi) is a Joseon-ethnic (Chaoxianzu) Park clan living around Benxi in Liaoning, China; its seat name is taken from the city where it settled. The founder is Park Yeong-gang (朴英强), and descendants believe their ancestors were Koreans who went to Manchuria in the Ming-Qing transition, particularly soldiers under General Gang Hong-rip who were captured by the Later Jin after the 1619 Battle of Sarhu (Fuche) and settled near Benxi.

Place Within the Park Surname

Unlike ordinary seats named for Korean places, this one takes its name from a Chinese settlement, and no link to any royal line or prince is documented. The clan association office is said to display a portrait of Bak Hyeokgeose, the traditional founder of the Park surname.

History and Identity

A Qing-era Benxi gazetteer is said to record that in 1659 land was divided among five Park brothers including Park Yeong-gang, and a 1786 bell at Yongning Temple lists the "Park family village" among donors, suggesting an established village by then. The villagers were classed as Manchu under the Qing and as Han in the 1958 census, and were reclassified as Korean after a collective petition in the 1982 census.

Association and Generation Names

The Beonsi Park Association was founded in 2006 under chairman Park Myeong-gyeom and reportedly identified about 7,000 descendants and completed a genealogy. Generation names are still used, currently in the sequence Mun (文), Myeong (明), Hui (希), Seung. Park Mun-man and Park Myeong-gu are mentioned as village elders.

Limits of the Sources

The population is an association estimate and is not part of Korean census data. The details rest on a Wikipedia summary, so consult the association and local sources for more.
