The founder of the Bunseong Bae clan (盆城 裵氏) is Bae Won-ryong (裵元龍). According to wiki-derived sources he was a sixth-generation descendant of Bae Hyeon-gyeong, a founding minister of Goryeo, and the eldest son of Bae Sa-hyeok, Lord of Garak; under King Gongmin he served as Minister of War and Supreme Commander and was enfeoffed as Lord of Bunseong, and as Magistrate of Gyerim he is said to have driven off Japanese pirates in 1385. Bunseong (盆城) is an old name of Gimhae in South Gyeongsang; Gimhae was the Garak state, annexed by Silla in 532 as Geumgwan-gun, and became Gimhae City in 1981.
The same source lists the Gimhae Bae as another name, yet the 2015 census counts 48,427 Bunseong Bae and 53,222 Gimhae Bae separately (101,649 combined). Whether they are one lineage or two was not confirmed here, so check your genealogy.
Branches include the Guyeon-gong (founder Bae Jeong-bi), Jinsa-gong (Bae Jeong-mi, Bae Jeong-hyeon), Ijo-champan-gong (Bae Maeng-hu), Haeju-moksa-gong (Bae Su), Jeju-moksa-gong and Munhasijung-gong (both listed under Bae Geuk-su), Aeun-gong (Bae Jin-son), Noeun-gong (Bae Ha) and Goseong-gunsu-gong (Bae Mun-bo). Some founders and generation counts overlap within the source, so these are not settled.
Bae Maeng-hu (1448-1479) passed the civil examination in 1462 and became Vice Minister of Personnel; Bae Dae-yu (1563-1632) passed in 1608 and became Vice Minister of War; Bae Gyeong-nam (1548-1597) took part in the Battle of Danghangpo in the Imjin War. In modern times there is Bae Ui-hwan, fourth Governor of the Bank of Korea.
