청안 이씨(淸安 李氏) — A small Yi seat of Cheongan, Goesan, North Chungcheong, split into the Yeongnam Chungwon and Honam Chungan branches; accounts of the founder differ by source.
A small Yi seat of Cheongan, Goesan, North Chungcheong, split into the Yeongnam Chungwon and Honam Chungan branches; accounts of the founder differ by source. In the 2015 Census the 청안 이씨 clan numbered about 18270 people, one of Korea's major surnames and clans. Even among people surnamed 이, a different clan seat (bon-gwan, 청안) means a different lineage. New to these terms? See the bon-gwan, pa & hangnyeol guide.
The Cheongan Yi (淸安 李氏) takes its seat from Cheongan-myeon in Goesan, North Chungcheong, formerly Cheongan county. Korean Wikipedia has only a stub, so details rest on Namuwiki and news articles, and they conflict. Namuwiki gives the 2015 census as 18,270 people. It is a separate seat from Jeonju Yi or Yeonan Yi.
Namuwiki says the seat splits into the Chungwon branch (Yeongnam), founded by Yi Yang-gil, who is said to have died in the 1356 Jeju revolt and been made Lord Cheongan, and the Chungan branch (Honam), founded by Yi Han-beon, said to be Hallim scholar made Earl Cheongan for resisting the Red Turbans in 1363. Both once honoured Yi Hak-nyeon as common founder, who was later dropped for chronological problems; a news article names Yi Han-beon as founder. Namuwiki itself notes a roughly 120-year gap between Yi Han-beon and his supposed son. This site therefore states the founder only as tradition.
Namuwiki lists Yi Ji, Yi Eung-chun, Yi Nul and Yi Bang-rin, but they could not be cross-checked against other sources, so no person pages were created.

The name is easily mixed with Cheongju, Chungju, Cheonghae and Yeonan Yi. A search for 'Cheongwon Yi' turned up no evidence of such a seat; Cheongwon was only the name of a county merged into Cheongju in 2014. Check the hanja 淸安 in your register.
Cheongan is a district in southwest Goesan with a surviving county school. The direct origin of the seat was not confirmed; the founders' titles Lord/Earl Cheongan may be the source, but that is only an inference.
As a small seat of about 18,000 people it has little published scholarship. Branch history, generation characters, clan association and register years were not confirmed. Ask your elders and the clan association; corrections are welcome.
The 청안 이씨 clan association can be found in the Korean E-Jokbo Library clan-association directory.
