Founder and Origin of the Seat

The Seonsan Park clan (善山 朴氏) takes Seonsan-eup in Gumi, North Gyeongsang, as its seat and is also called the Gumi Park. Wikipedia names Park Seon-min (朴善敏) as founder and describes him as a direct descendant of Prince Milseong Park Eon-chim, eldest son of King Gyeongmyeong of Silla. He is said to have been recommended for office by hereditary privilege and served as a local magistrate; because the article places him in Joseon, his connection to the earlier ancestors is not clear from the source alone. How the seat came to be Seonsan was not found in public sources.

Population

Wikipedia gives 709 people for 2000; 2015 figures were not found and Namuwiki gives none. No information on home regions or clan villages was found in public sources.

Notable Person: Lady Geunbin

The best-known figure is Lady Geunbin Park, a consort of King Sejo, born in 1425; the genealogy of the Deokwon branch of the Jeonju Yi lists her as a daughter of Park Seon-min of Seonsan. Rising from sugui to gwiin, she was raised to Geunbin in 1483 and bore Prince Deokwon (1449-1498) and Prince Changwon (1458-1484). She is sometimes wrongly called a sister of the martyred minister Park Paeng-nyeon, but their seats differ. Her tomb is in Gwangsa-dong, Yangju. The statement that she was Park Seon-min's daughter rests on genealogical record, and the relation to his period needs further checking.

Branches and Clan Association

No branches, branch founders, clan association or generation names could be verified in public sources, so no branch cards are given. Please consult the clan's genealogy.

Place Within the Park Surname

The Seonsan Park is presented as a descendant line of Prince Milseong Park Eon-chim and thus linked to the Miryang Park genealogy. The eight-princes account is a tradition in Park genealogies not accepted by every seat. Take care not to confuse it with the Seonsan Kim and other clans of the Gumi area.
