An Yun-deok was an early-Joseon civil official from Gwangju, courtesy name Seonggyeong, posthumous title Ikheon. A great-grandson of An Seong, he was the son of the magistrate An Paeng-ro and grandson of An Jong-saeng. His dates of birth and death were not confirmed here.
He passed the licentiate exam in 1477 and the civil examination in 1483, then served in the Academy and Confucian college, as censor and military secretary. After a second exam in 1497 he held drafting offices and in 1501 became chief royal secretary.
In 1503 he went to Ming but was implicated in the Gapja literati purge and exiled to Gimje. He returned in 1507 under Jungjong and in 1510, when the Japanese disturbance at the three ports broke out, served as Gyeongsang commissioner and deputy commander and helped put it down. He later was minister of Justice, governor of Pyeongan (where he restored the shrines of Dangun and Gija), and minister of Public Works, reaching second state councillor in 1527.
The 1510 disturbance at the three ports was an uprising by Japanese residents of Busanpo, Jepo and Yeompo against tighter Joseon control. The Encyclopedia says An became head of the Jungchubu and served as Gyeongsang commissioner and deputy commander and contributed to ending it. Trade between Joseon and Japan was cut back considerably afterward.
The Gapja purge, in 1504, was King Yeonsan's punishment of many officials over his deposed birth mother. An is recorded as implicated after returning from Ming in 1503 and exiled to Gimje. After the 1506 coup that brought Jungjong to the throne, he was restored in 1507 as vice-minister of Justice.
As Pyeongan governor in 1515 he restored the shrines of Dangun and Gija, said to have promoted reverence for ancestors and Confucian customs. He entered the Giroso in 1526 and became second state councillor in 1527. An Hwang is recorded among his descendants.
The location of his grave was not confirmed.
