Bae Dae-yu (裵大維, 1563-1632) was a civil official of mid-Joseon. According to the Wikipedia clan article he passed the civil examination in 1608 (41st year of Seonjo) and rose to Vice Minister of War in 1621 (13th year of Gwanghaegun). He is one of the six Bunseong Bae men listed as civil examination graduates in Joseon, together with Bae Maeng-hu, Bae Mun-bo, Bae Se-jeok, Bae In and Bae Hong-u, and also passed the lower saengwon examination.
He was active from the end of Seonjo's reign through Gwanghaegun's and into the period after the 1623 Restoration. A scholarly article on the poet Bae Hong-u describes Bae Dae-yu as a core official-writer of a Greater Northerner (Daebuk) family under Gwanghaegun, and says his son worked as a local gentry figure around Hapcheon, supporting his father's political career; it says Bae Hong-u formed ties through marriage with the family of Jeong In-hong.
That article, however, gives Bae Hong-u's dates as 1580 to 1627, which does not fit a father born in 1563. Either the birth year or the family relation may have been transmitted wrongly, and this was not settled here. His later career after 1623 and his burial place were also not confirmed.
Wikipedia lists six civil graduates from the Bunseong Bae clan in Joseon (Bae Dae-yu, Bae Maeng-hu, Bae Mun-bo, Bae Se-jeok, Bae In, Bae Hong-u) and some twenty-four military graduates including Bae Dam and Bae Gyeong-bok. Civil graduates were few, but military, saengwon and jinsa successes appear steadily.
Under Gwanghaegun (r. 1608-1623) the Greater Northerners led by Jeong In-hong dominated politics until the 1623 Restoration toppled them. Bae Dae-yu's passing of the examination in 1608 and appointment as Vice Minister of War in 1621 fall within this period. His situation after 1623 was not confirmed; only his death in 1632 is recorded.
