In 1919 he signed the Paris Petition (Pari Jangseo) as one of the Confucian scholars.
Bak Gyu-ho (1850–1930), courtesy name Chanyeo and pen name Sachon, left behind a collected works titled Sachonjip. On hearing of the 1905 Eulsa Treaty he joined Gwak Jong-seok and others in submitting a joint memorial of protest, and after Korea's annexation in 1910 he refused the "bestowed money" (eunsageum) Japan offered as a conciliatory gesture. In 1919 he was one of 137 Confucian scholars who signed the Paris Petition — an independence appeal addressed to the Paris Peace Conference — and was imprisoned as a result.
