Late Joseon civil official and scholar who proposed the theory of Great Ultimate impartiality; leader of the Soron faction

Park Se-chae (朴世采, 1631-1695) was a civil official and scholar of the late Joseon period, with the courtesy name Hwasuk (和叔) and the art names Hyeonseok (玄石) and Namgye (南溪). His clan lineage was Bannam.
As a leader of the Soron faction well versed in Neo-Confucianism and ritual studies, he proposed the theory of the Great Ultimate impartiality (hwanggeuk tangpyeongnon) to ease factional strife, and rose to Left State Councillor.
He left vast writings, including Dongyu Sau-rok, which organized the scholarly lineages of Confucian scholars from Silla to the mid-Joseon period, as well as Namgye Jip. He was enshrined in the Confucian shrine (Munmyo).
