Life & career

Park Yong-man was an armed-independence movement leader in the United States who founded the Korean Youth Military Academy and served as chief editor of the Sinhan Minbo.

Born in Cheorwon, Gangwon-do, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1905, founded the Korean Youth Military School in Nebraska in 1909, and established the Korean National Brigade and its military academy in Hawaii in 1914 to train armed independence fighters. Regarded as one of the three leading figures of the Korean-American community alongside Ahn Chang-ho and Syngman Rhee, he later worked in Manchuria, the Russian Far East and Beijing to pursue an independence war through alliances with Chinese warlords. In October 1928 he was assassinated in Beijing by a member of the Righteous Brotherhood after refusing to hand over independence movement funds.
