Mid-founder (first generation) of the Onyang Bang clan; said to have been Lord of Onsu

Bang Un (方雲) is honored by the Onyang Bang as mid-founder and counted as the first generation. Because records of the generations after the founder Bang Ji were lost, the clan's lineage effectively begins again with him. What is known of his life comes mostly from the genealogy, the clan's origin stele, local encyclopedias and newspaper series, and dates and offices vary slightly from source to source.
According to clan sources, he came from Sangju, helped Wang Geon, founder of Goryeo, defeat Gyeon Hwon of Later Baekje as a founding merit subject, and served several kings from Taejo to Seongjong for about sixty years. He is said to have served as senior general, royal secretary and ministry official and to have become Left Executive of the Department of State Affairs under King Gwangjong; newspaper series date this to 963 or, in one case, 903. When the Khitan invaded under King Seongjong (given as 992 or 993), he is said to have distinguished himself at the age of 77 and been enfeoffed as Lord of Onsu (溫水君). The Encyclopedia of Asan Culture summarizes that he received the title and lands in Onyang, Asan and Sinchang for his service under Taejo, Gwangjong and Seongjong, and that as his descendants lived in Onyang, the Sangju Bang became the Onyang Bang.
Tradition also holds that the king let him spend his later years below Mount Gwaan in Onsu and renamed it Mount Baebang (拜方山), "revering the Bang." Baebang-eup in Asan takes its name from this mountain, which in the Joseon period was written 排方, "rejecting the Bang," and is now written 排芳. A newspaper series from Uljin says the seat changed from Sangju to Onyang from the time of his son Bang Heon-ju, which differs from other sources that name his son Bang Jung-tak.
According to the genealogy, Bang Jung-tak of the 2nd generation was chief state councillor under King Mokjong, and Bang Hyu of the 3rd generation fought the Khitan under King Hyeonjong. A newspaper series shows a photograph of an altar dedicated to Bang Un, Lord of Onsu, and the clan continues to hold rites for him as its first-generation ancestor.
The location of his grave could not be confirmed; a newspaper series shows a photograph of an altar dedicated to him.
The whole Onyang Bang clan counts him as the first generation. According to the genealogy, the line passed to his son Bang Jung-tak and grandson Bang Hyu, and after Bang U-seon of the 12th generation it divided into seven branches in the 13th.
