Life & career

Choe Cheon-ro is traditionally the founder of the Sangnyeong Choe clan and is said to have held the Goryeo post of Munha Sirang Pyeongjangsa, a chief-minister-level office. His dates and the characters of his name vary and were not confirmed.

After the restorer Choe Yu-ga the generations were lost, and descendants continue the line from Choe Seon-bo (Nangjang-gong) and Choe Yeon (Busa-gong). He is understood as a distant ancestor of Chief State Councillor Choe Hang.

Basis for Founder Status

The Digital Sejong Encyclopedia, Wikipedia and Namu Wiki all name Choe Cheon-ro as founder and Munha Sirang Pyeongjangsa. His earlier ancestry is not known. It is reported that Choe Heung-won left a handwritten note calling the family an old house of the Three Han, but records were lost in wars.

What Is Not Confirmed

We could not directly confirm Choe Cheon-ro in the Goryeosa. His biography rests on genealogies and later sources and should be read as tradition. Please check with the national clan association and your genealogy.
