Life & career

Choe Hang was a civil official and scholar of the early Joseon period who served for about 18 years as a scholar of the Hall of Worthies (Jiphyeonjeon), supporting King Sejong's scholarly projects. His courtesy name was Jeongbo (貞父) and his pen name Taeheojeong (太虛亭); he placed first in the higher civil service examination in 1434.

He took part in the creation of Hunminjeongeum and was involved in compiling the Hunminjeongeum Haerye, Yongbi eocheon-ga, and Dongguk jeongun, and later led the compilation of the Gyeongguk daejeon (National Code). For his merits in the Gyeyu coup (계유정난) and other events he was repeatedly enrolled as a merit subject, and he rose to chief state councillor (yeonguijeong) during King Seongjong's reign. His posthumous title was Munjeong (文靖).
