Choe Myeong-hui (1947-1998) was a novelist born in Jeonju, North Jeolla, of the Sangnyeong Choe clan. A graduate of Jeonbuk National University, she taught school before debuting in 1980 with the short story "Collapsing Light" in the JoongAng Ilbo spring literary contest, and in 1981 won a Dong-A Ilbo novel contest with the first part of Honbul.
Honbul portrays the life of a head family of the Maean Yi clan in Namwon during the Japanese colonial period, the villagers of the commoners' hamlet and Koreans in Manchuria. It was serialized in the monthly Shin Dong-a from 1988 to 1995 and published in ten volumes in 1996. Her awards include the Danjae Literary Prize, Sejong Cultural Prize, Women Dong-A Prize and Ho-Am Prize in the Arts, and she died of ovarian cancer in December 1998. She is described as a 17th-generation descendant of Choe Su-ung.
Maean Village in Honbul is modeled on Nobong in Sama-myeon, Namwon, a seat of the Sangnyeong Choe. The Honbul Literature Museum opened in Nobong in 2004. See Choe Su-ung.
