Life & career

Kim Deuk-bae (1312-1362) was a late Goryeo scholar-official and general from Sangju, with the pen name Nangye. His father Kim Rok served as Panjeonui. He passed the civil examination and became a Yemun Geomnyeol.

He became Right Deputy Royal Secretary in 1351 but was dismissed in 1352 on a false charge brought by Jo Il-sin and others. From 1357 he held frontier commands in the north-west and rose to Dongji Chumillwonsa by 1359.

In 1360 he helped defeat the Red Turban invaders with Gyeong Cheon-heung and An U, and was named a Merit Subject and Jeongdang Munhak. When the invaders returned in 1361 he was defeated at Jeollyeongchaek, but in early 1362 he took part in retaking the capital.

Kim Yong, who envied Jeong Se-un, forged a royal order that led An U and Yi Bang-sil to kill Jeong, and then moved to eliminate them all. Kim Deuk-bae had argued against the killing but was captured at Sangju and beheaded on 1 March 1362 at the age of 51.
