Kim Do-hwa, of the Uiseong Kim clan, was a Confucian scholar who studied under Ryu Chi-myeong and served as a magistrate of the State Tribunal before the Eulmi Incident. In 1895, in protest of Empress Myeongseong's assassination and the hair-cutting edict, he issued a manifesto on behalf of Andong's Confucian scholars, and the following year was named commander of the Andong righteous army, leading hundreds of militia in seizing the Andong provincial office and driving out its governor.
After the militia disbanded, he lived in defiant seclusion, posting a sign reading "a house that firmly opposes annexation" on his gate and petitioning against the 1905 Eulsa Treaty and the 1910 annexation. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriotic Order, in 1990.
