Life & career

Hwang Yun-gil (黃允吉, born 1536) was a civil official of the middle Joseon period from the Jangsu Hwang clan; courtesy name Gilje, pen name Usongdang, and a member of the Westerners faction. The Segye Ilbo article presents him as a descendant of Hwang Hui. Wikipedia says he passed the civil examination under King Myeongjong and rose to Minister of War, while another source gives Second Minister of Works, so his final post varies by source.

In September 1589 the court decided to send an embassy, and in March 1590 King Seonjo dispatched it with Hwang Yun-gil as chief envoy, Kim Seong-il as vice-envoy and Heo Seong as recorder; they returned to Busan in January 1591. Wikipedia says his kinsman Hwang Jin accompanied the mission.

On his return Hwang Yun-gil reported that Japan would invade, while Kim Seong-il said there were no signs of it, and the court is said to have followed the latter. When the war broke out in 1592 King Seonjo is said to have regretted not believing Hwang's report. He is also recorded as a first-class merit subject for the dynastic-record correction. His date of death was not confirmed.

Conflicting Reports

The split between the envoys' reports is often cited when explaining Joseon's preparations before the Imjin War. Wikipedia says Hwang Yun-gil reported that war would certainly come while Kim Seong-il said there were no signs, and that the court followed Kim, leaving defences neglected. The account has been simplified in later retelling, and some studies look at the content of both reports together with factional background.

Tomb and Local Heritage

The tomb of Hwang Yun-gil lies in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, and was designated Goyang City Local Heritage No. 55 in 2009; Korean Wikipedia has a separate entry for it.

Timeline of the Embassy

In September 1589 the court decided to send an embassy; in March 1590 it left for Japan with Hwang Yun-gil as chief envoy, Kim Seong-il as vice-envoy and Heo Seong as recorder. The party met Toyotomi Hideyoshi and returned to Busan in January 1591. The Imjin War began the next year, in 1592.

An academic abstract records that the party also met Japanese monks such as Fujiwara Seika. What they saw in Japan underlay their reports, but studies differ on why the two reports diverged, pointing to political position and interpretation.
