Life & career

Jang Sa-jeong (張思靖), son of the Uiju garrison commander Jang Yeol (張烈) and younger brother of Jang Sa-gil, was a military officer of the late Goryeo and early Joseon from the Uiju magnate family said to have resisted Hobaldo's 1382 raid together with their father. His dates of birth and death could not be confirmed.

He took part in the founding of Joseon in 1392 and was enrolled as a founding merit subject (third class, enrolled later as an addition), and in 1397 is said to have cleared Japanese pirates from the northwest coast of Punghae-do. In 1398 he cooperated in the First Strife of Princes and was enrolled as a second-class Jeongsa merit subject, receiving the title Prince Hwaseong according to the introduction. After serving as Vice Commissioner of the Central Secretariat, Joseon commander and other posts, he went to Ming China in 1411 as the birthday envoy (seongjeolsa).

His career was not smooth. In 1399 he was confined at Cheongju on suspicion of harming the wife of Namgung Seo and was pardoned in July of the same year; in 1417 his merit certificate was withdrawn and he was confined at Sangju, later moved to Deokcheon, on charges of taking a slave of Prince Hoean (Bang-gan) as a concubine without reporting it. The navigation box on Wikipedia marks his merit titles as stripped.

Merit Rolls and Punishments

Like his brother Jang Sa-gil, Jang Sa-jeong appears on both the founding and Jeongsa merit rolls, yet the annals also record punishments such as confinement and withdrawal of his merit certificate. His case shows both the brothers' activity as military men in early Joseon politics and the ups and downs they went through. Titles and merit classes differ between sources, so verify the details in the annals or your genealogy.

Grave
