Jeon Sang-ui (1575-1627) was a military officer born in Gudong, Gwangju, of the Cheonan Jeon clan. He passed the military examination in 1603 and is said to have gone to Japan on an embassy in 1617 and worked to repatriate prisoners. He served as magistrate of Guseong.
When the Later Jin (Qing) army crossed the Yalu in January 1627, he fought five days at Anju fortress and died in battle (Wikipedia gives his birth as 1576; the year varies by source). After the war he was posthumously promoted to Minister of War and Chief of the Office of Special Counselors, and his body was brought from Anju to Gwangju and buried with state rites at Pyeongdusan on 26 July.

At Hwaam-dong in Gwangju the tomb was designated a local monument in 1977, and the Chungminsa shrine completed in 1985 holds his portrait and tablet, with a gate, a memorial gate (jeongnyeogak) and a relics hall. The Chungminsa at Anju is centered on Nam I-heung, with Jeon Sang-ui enshrined in the west annex. See also the Cheonan Jeon clan page.
