Commander of Busanjin who died a martyr at the Battle of Busanjin during the Imjin War

Jeong Bal's courtesy name was Jago (子固) and his pen name Baegun (白雲). Having passed the military examination in 1579, he passed through various military posts and was appointed jeolchung janggun, naval commander (susu cheomjeoljesa) of Busanjin in Left Gyeongsang Province.
When the Imjin War broke out in 1592, he fought to the death defending Busanjin Fortress, the first landing site of the Japanese army led by Konishi Yukinaga. Fighting in black armor, he was called the "General in Black" (黑衣將軍), and, defending the fortress against overwhelming odds, he was struck by a bullet and died in battle.
He is honored as a representative commander who died a martyr resisting the Japanese on land in the early Imjin War; his posthumous title was Chungjang (忠壯).
His grave is located in Baekseok-ri, Misan-myeon, Yeoncheon County, Gyeonggi Province.
He had a son, Jeong Heun (鄭昕), and his descendants settled in the Majeon area of Yeoncheon and around Jeokseong.
