Kim Seon-pyeong is the progenitor of the “new” Andong Kim clan. Said to have come from Silla's true-bone aristocracy, he helped Goryeo's founder Wang Geon in his campaign against Later Baekje's Gyeon Hwon, alongside fellow Andong leaders Gwon Haeng and Jang Jeong-pil, earning veneration as one of the “Three Grand Preceptors of Andong.”
In the 930 Battle of Byeongsan at Gochang (present-day Andong), he played a decisive role in cutting Later Baekje's supply lines and advancing Goryeo's forces, inflicting heavy losses that helped precipitate Later Baekje's eventual collapse. For this he was elevated to the senior court rank of Daegwang and the highest honorary title of Grand Preceptor, and his descendants took Andong, his base, as their clan seat. The so-called Jangdong Kim lineage, which dominated the power politics of the late Joseon court, descends from this line.
His memorial tablet is enshrined at Andong's Taesamyo shrine, and his grave lies within the Andong Kim clan's Taejangjaesa compound in Seohu-myeon, Andong.
His descendants took Andong as their ancestral seat and flourished as an in-law power family of late Joseon.
