Life & career

Bak Eun (朴誾), courtesy name Jung-yeol and pen name Eupchwiheon, belonged to the Goryeong Park clan. He is said to have studied under Choe Bu, a disciple of Kim Jong-jik, and to have been close to Yi Haeng and Nam Gon. He passed the civil service examination in 1496; he was dismissed in 1498 after impeaching Yu Ja-gwang and Seong Jun, and rose to be a compiler at the Office of Special Advisors in 1501 before being dismissed again.

Having absorbed the style of China's Jiangxi school of poetry, he developed his own manner and is called the leader of the 'Haedong Gangseo school'; with Yi Haeng, Hong Eon-chung and Jeong Hui-ryang he is counted among the 'four masters of poetry'. His collected works survive as the Eupchwiheon Yugo. Implicated in the Gapja Literati Purge of 1504, he was exiled to Dongnae, brought back to Seoul and executed; he was rehabilitated in 1506 and posthumously named chief royal secretary.
