Seol Chong is said to have been born to the monk Wonhyo and Princess Yoseok. His courtesy name was Chongji and pen name Bingwoldang. His birth year is estimated at about 655 and his death year is unknown; he is said to have reached the rank of hallim.
He is credited with offering the allegorical Hwawanggye to King Sinmun and with systematising idu, the method of writing Korean with Chinese characters, though some scholars regard him as a compiler rather than inventor since similar notation existed earlier. He was posthumously made Marquis Hongyu in 1022, enshrined in the Confucian Shrine alongside Choe Chi-won, and honored at Seoak Seowon in Gyeongju.
