Life & career

Shin Eung-tae (申應泰, 1643-1728) was a late-Joseon scholar of the Aju Shin clan, first named Eung-gae, with courtesy name Gillae and pen name Yongae. Born in Cheongju, North Chungcheong, he was the son of Shin Sim and a daughter of Ban Bong-ik of the Gwangju Ban clan, grandson of the filial Shin Ji-ik, and a disciple of Song Si-yeol (Song Si-yeol).

He lost his father at five but served his widowed mother devotedly. Though he passed the local examinations several times he never advanced in the national examination; changing course, he devoted himself to study, went deep into the Book of Changes and Neo-Confucianism, and was also versed in astronomy and calendrical science.

When Song Si-yeol was executed in 1689 (Sukjong 15) he wrote a protest memorial and demonstrated before the palace to seek his teacher's vindication, and led Confucian efforts to hold a sacrifice to the Ming Emperor Shenzong. In later life he trained younger scholars, and many came from his school. His writings include Yongae Munjip in four volumes, and works such as Saseo Jeyo Doseol are credited to him. He was added to Geomam Academy when it was rebuilt in 1958.

Scholarship

He is said to have studied the Book of Changes, Neo-Confucianism, astronomy and calendrical science, gave up the examinations for research and teaching, and many scholars came from his school.

Acting for His Teacher

After Song Si-yeol's execution he strove for his vindication with a protest memorial and demonstration and led the Ming Shenzong sacrifice movement, actions that can be read as voicing the Noron-aligned Confucian position.

Family and Enshrinement

His father Shin Sim was a filial son honored at the Samhyogak with Shin Ji-ik, and his mother was a daughter of Ban Bong-ik of the Gwangju Ban clan. Raised in a family where both grandfather's and father's filial conduct were known, he lost his father at five yet served his mother. Geomam Academy in Cheongju, founded in 1694 and demolished in 1871, was rebuilt in 1958 and added him; it is now Cheongju local heritage No. 31.

Grave

His burial place is not given in the sources consulted.

Descendants

He descends from the filial family of his father Shin Sim and grandfather Shin Ji-ik.
