Mid-Joseon official who compiled the draft of the Yeosan Song genealogy; pen name Hobong; Jeongga-gong branch
| Era | 조선 중기 |
| Clan | 여산 송씨 |
Song Eon-sin (宋言愼) was a mid-Joseon official of the Yeosan Song clan with the pen name Hobong (壺峯); the name is confirmed by a colophon in the genealogy reading "descendant Hobong Song Eon-sin compiled." The clan places him in the Jeongga-gong branch. His dates and official career could not be confirmed here (Jeong Eon-sin, known for service as Saheonbu head and Hamgyeong governor, is a different person and should not be confused with him).
He matters in clan history above all as the man who made the draft of the Yeosan Song genealogy. In his 1606 (Seonjo 39) preface he stated that the family record handed down in the house had been burned during the Imjin War. A record kept by Song Won-gyeong was later obtained, but it was sketchy and flawed, treating other surnames in detail while giving the clan's own kin only briefly.
He made a handwritten draft from various sources but could not publish it himself. In 1610 his kinsman Song Il, serving as magistrate of Cheongju, raised the funds and published it on the basis of this draft; this is the first edition (Gyeongsulbo) of the Yeosan Song genealogy. A later edition published by Song Hui-eop in 1653 was designated a cultural property in 1991.
The 1610 first edition is a one-volume woodblock book consisting of a cover, preface, afterword, lineage chart and postscript. The chart has six tiers, children are listed in birth order with legitimate and illegitimate sons strictly distinguished, and other surnames are recorded only to sons-in-law and two generations of maternal grandchildren. As the oldest edition of the Yeosan Song genealogy it is valued highly as source material. Song Yo-in (magistrate of Dangjin), Song Seon (Danyang) and Song Bing (Jeonui) helped with the publication.
