Roots and History of the Yonggung Jeon Clan

The Seat at Yonggung and the Branching

The Yonggung Jeon clan (龍宮 全氏) takes its seat at Yonggung-myeon, Yecheon County, North Gyeongsang. Yonggung was called Chuksan-hyeon and Wonsan-hyeon in Silla, raised to Yongju under King Seongjong of Goryeo and renamed Yonggung under King Hyeonjong, when it was placed under Sangju; it later came under Yecheon, and part of it remains Yonggung-myeon today. The founder is Jeon Bang-suk, whose line branched off from the Jeongseon Jeon clan and took Yonggung as its seat.

Accounts of his lineage differ. The Segye Ilbo calls him a 13th-generation descendant of Jeon I-gap of the Jeongseon Jeon, a clan source calls him 14th-generation and 28th from the primal ancestor Jeon Seop, and Wikipedia gives only the 28th generation from Jeon Seop. Check your genealogy for generation counts; Jeon I-gap and Jeon Seop are covered on the Jeongseon Jeon page.

The Flow of the Family

Jeon Bang-suk is said to have been a Hallim scholar and risen to Munha Sijung Pyeongjangsa under King Chungnyeol of Goryeo, and to have been enfeoffed as Prince Yongseong. His son Jeon Jeong-min rose through Jungseo Sain, Samjungdaegwang and Cheomui to Taesa, and Jeong-min's son Jeon Chung-gyeong is said to have revived the family as Jeonbeop Chongnang. Chung-gyeong's grandson Jeon Jin was Jeonseo, and Jin's son Jeon Won-bal is said to have placed first in the Yuan civil examination in late Goryeo and been made Prince Chuksan under King Taejo of Joseon.

In Joseon, Jeon Sam-seong of Seonjo's reign is said to have served well in the Imjin War, and the scholar Jeon O-ik of Injo's reign was known for his broad learning.
