Ahn Chang-ho, pen name Dosan, was born in Gangseo, South Pyongan Province. He studied at Guse Academy and took part in the Independence Club and the People's Joint Assembly before traveling to the United States to study in 1902. After returning to Korea in 1907 he organized the secret New People's Association (Sinminhoe) with Yu Gil-jun, Yun Chi-ho, and Kim Gu to promote national enlightenment and self-strengthening.
In 1908 he founded Daesong School in Pyongyang, guiding youth education under the motto 'Live honestly,' and in 1913 he reorganized the Young Korean Academy and the Heungsadan into a training organization to cultivate leaders for the independence movement. He went on to lead the movement as Minister of Home Affairs of the Korean Provisional Government, among other posts.
Arrested in 1937 in connection with the domestic Suyang Dong-u-hoe case, he was imprisoned at Seodaemun Prison, where torture left him with cirrhosis and pneumonia; he died on March 10, 1938 at Keijo Imperial University Hospital. He was first buried at Mangu-ri Public Cemetery and reinterred in 1973 at Dosan Park in Gangnam, Seoul, alongside his wife Lee Hye-ryeon.
