His art name was Dosan (島山). He organized the Independence Club, the Gongnip Association, and the Sinminhoe, founded the Daeseong School and the Heungsadan, and devoted himself to the national movement and education; he was a leader of the independence movement who served as Minister of the Interior of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, among other roles.
