An Byeong-chan raised and led righteous army (uibyeong) forces in the Hongseong area during the Eulmi Righteous Army uprising of 1896, and continued resistance activities until 1907.
Born in 1854 in Hongju County (present-day Cheongyang), South Chungcheong Province, as the eldest son of An Chang-sik, he belonged to the Sunheung An clan. He studied classical Chinese learning under his grandfather An Yong from childhood and was already skilled in poetry and calligraphy by age ten. In late 1895 (January 1896 by the solar calendar) he led roughly 180 militia raised by his father, entering Hongju together with Chae Gwang-muk, and subsequently helped lead the Hongju righteous army alongside Kim Bok-han and Lee Seol.
He later retired from public life to devote himself to educating the younger generation until his death in 1929; his funeral, according to the Dong-a Ilbo, was attended by about 500 mourners bearing hundreds of memorial banners.
