An Ji-ho (1857–1922), a Confucian scholar from Goseong, South Gyeongsang Province, repeatedly protested Japan's encroachment on Korean sovereignty, sending written condemnations to the Japanese Residency-General after the 1905 Eulsa Treaty and again to the Japanese Foreign Ministry after the 1910 annexation, for which he was jailed several times.
When the March First Movement spread nationwide in 1919, he covertly supported young organizers in Haman County and helped mobilize a market-day demonstration on March 19 in which roughly 3,000 people marched on government offices. Arrested as a leader of the uprising, he was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment by the Daegu Appellate Court and died in custody at the Masan branch of Busan Prison.
