An Jae-hong, from Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, studied economics at Waseda University. When the March 1st Movement broke out in 1919, he led student demonstrations in Pyeongtaek, and later that year organized the Korean Youth Diplomatic Corps to liaise with the Provisional Government, for which he was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison.
Entering journalism in 1923, he served as chief editorialist and later president of the Chosun Ilbo, and in 1927 was elected general secretary of the Singanhoe, leading cooperation between nationalist and socialist independence factions. He was imprisoned nine times under Japanese rule, totaling seven years and eight months.
After liberation he served as vice-chairman of the Committee for the Preparation of Korean Independence, took part in the left-right coalition movement, and was appointed Civil Administrator under the U.S. military government in 1947. Elected to the National Assembly in 1950, he was abducted to North Korea during the Korean War and died there in 1965.
